All social work Licenses expire on July 31 of odd years. At the time of license renewal all licensees are required to have completed the 40 hours of approved continuing education units including 6 hours of Ethics (must be done face to face; no online courses are accepted).  No more than twelve (12) CEUs may be accepted in any two-year renewal period.  All continuing education hours submitted by social workers for license renewal must have been earned during the current 2 year licensing cycle.  The current licensing cycle is August 1, 2009 to July 31, 2011.

Twenty of 40 required CE credits for LGSWs, LCSWs, and LCSW-Cs may be earned online.  Online coursework will count as Category II.  Members with the LSWA license are required to earn 30 hours of CE credit and 15 hours of credit may be online.

You may take as many Ethics courses as you like online and they will count as Category II CEUs.  However, they will NOT count as your three hours of required ethics.  The three hours of required ethics, content must be Category I which means it must be taken as an in-person, face to face, workshop.  (Thanks to MD Chapter for this clarification.)  Note that Maryland has a staggered 2 year renewal process that expires October 31 of each year.

In Virginia, licensed clinical social workers, LCSWs, are required to have 30 hours of CE credit every two years.  Twenty of those hours must be in Category I (formally organized learning activities), but 10 hours may be taken in Category II activities.  For the most part, the Virginia Board does not distinguish between face-to-face and online classes, but emphasizes that social workers need to apply professional judgment to be certain that online classes meet the requirements listed in the Social Work Regulations.

Licensed social workers, LSWs, are required to have 15 hours of CE credit every two years in Category I, but 5 hours may be taken in Category II.  With regard to the minimum hours that pertain to ethics, standards of practice or law, the required 2 hours may be accepted through online coursework at this time. Again, professional judgment is emphasized. All licensees shall renew their licenses on or before June 30 of each odd-numbered year.
